Meeting TopicThe Janes: Lessons from a pre-Roe abortion collective for a post-Roe reality

On June 24th, 2022 the Supreme Court of the United States struck down Roe v. Wade, eviscerating abortion rights for millions of Americans. Before Roe, unsafe abortions caused hundreds of preventable injuries, sterilizations, and deaths each year. From 1969 to 1973 the Jane Collective, formally known as the Abortion Counseling Service of Women’s Liberation, took matters into their own hands – providing over 10,000 safe and affordable abortions in Chicago, IL. After the legalization of abortion in 1973 the Jane Collective disbanded, but their legacy lives on. Join us to learn more about the bold and brave work of the Jane collective and how modern-day abortion activists are fighting back against antiabortion extremism to help their communities take control of their bodies and their futures. Attendees will leave this program with increased awareness of the current abortion landscape and tools to plug into the present-day networks fighting against all odds to ensure equitable access to abortion care for all.
