Meeting Topic:  Challenges to Voting for Incarcerated Persons

New Jersey laws prevent incarcerated people from voting as well as those who were on parole or probation while other states do not prevent this. Many citizens who were incarcerated and those who were on parole/probation don’t even try to register to vote because they incorrectly think other states laws that prohibit it also applies to New Jersey. Another difficulty that formerly incarnated people encounter then registering to vote is that parole facilities that they report to are frequently residential locations. In addition, the Prosecutors Office also negatively impacts their voting rights. Finally, many formerly incarnated people and those on parole/probation would like to become poll workers, a position that is frequently difficult to fill.

Annette L. Scott, RN, BSN, MSN is the Director of Reenter-Register-Voter-Committee and an active member of the League of Women Voters of Monmouth County. She visits parole facilities throughout the state to register citizens, instructs weekly classes for the Reentry Corp, for formerly incarcerated citizens, is an Ambassador for the Reentry Corp and provides assistance for women who have been incarcerated and now are reuniting with the children and families.
